Spousal loss has a significant impact on a survivor spouse. The cause of death is related to grief outcomes. Medical factors but also cultural beliefs may explain the cause of death. Following a spousal loss, two types of grief by the survivor spouse can occur: (1) grief for the deceased spouse and (2) grief for himself or herself. The survivor spouse may have to contend with issues of loneliness, living arrangement, and identity. With spousal death, the survivor spouse’s identity changes from married to widowed. In some cultures, a married woman’s identity is tied to her husband’s. In others, it is a choice. For some bereaved spouses, therefore, in moving forward with their lives, the issue of identity could pose a challenge.
