Interannual Variability in Rainfall Intermittency Across Different Climatic Zones of Nigeria

Rainfall is an important weather parameter in sub-Saharan Africa. This is due to its role in the socio-economic and agricultural landscape of the countries involved. Nigeria is the largest country in the region, with a heavy dependence on rainfall for agricultural and industrial activities. Understanding how inter-rainfall events change over time will aid in climate change adaptation and mitigation. In this study, rainfall data for 8 locations from different climatic regions of the country was studied using the burstiness index. Intervals between rainy days, 1 mm of rainfall, for each year in the period were analyzed for each year from 1982 to 2011. The burstiness index can determine if the rainfall interval is a regular time series, a Poisson/random time series, or an extremely bursty time series. Several years, including 1984, 1986, 1989, 1995, 2004, and 2009, were found to have periodic intervals between rainfall in many locations. Locations such as Ibadan, Nguru, and Minna were found to have a declining burstiness index, which suggests that the rainfall dynamics in these locations are changing. The results obtained were correlated with major climatic observations, including large-scale oscillations. By considering the intermittency and burstiness of rainfall across different climatic zones, adequate agricultural, environmental, and economic plans can be made for the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies for the country.
