Socio-Economic Development through Ecological and Social Solidarity: A Case of NABARD Springshed-Based Participatory Watershed Development Program in the North East Region
摘要
The North Eastern (NE) part of the country comprising eight states with a population of 45 million (according to the 2011 census) occupying 2.62 lakh sq. km of land with a forest cover of 169.521 sq. km is nature’s paradise. NE India is a biodiversity hotspot region, home to tropical wet evergreen forests. Many species of flora and fauna are endemic to the region. National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) as the apex bank for rural development is continuously striving to improve the socio-economic life of rural people. An institutional approach that fosters social solidarity would pave the way for inclusive socio-economic development with sustainability. The present chapter will focus on establishing a participatory and collaborative model with institutional support aimed at achieving ecologically balanced sustainable growth, thereby eradicating poverty by creating a robust multidimensional structural framework. The Springshed-based Watershed Development Programme implemented by NABARD in the NE region of the country would further promote the conservation of biodiversity and accelerate the socio-economic growth process. The program endeavours to build community-based participation ensuring the availability and sustainability of water resources throughout the year. The program can lead to long-term implications that improve water bodies, irrigation channels, clean water, and greater forest cover.
