This chapter deal with the pertinent issue of the urban poor in Indian subcontinent, with Dharavi as the primary focus. Dharavi, one of the largest slums of Asia in Mumbai, is home to more than a million people and is characterised by social diversity and economic vitality. This chapter, through the application of the solidarity approach within the framework of human geography, shall analyse the subculture of solidarity and resistance developed in Dharavi. A crucial aspect of the discussion would be to explore literary text as an alternative form of modelling human cohesion through Kalpana Sharma’s Rediscovering Dharavi where the slum dwellers’ uphill battle in building their identities are brought to life through a series of spellbinding stories. Focus will be on concrete solidarity performances manifested through a sense of collective responsibility and agency. While doing so, the normative city-slum dichotomy shall be challenged and the boundaries shall be reconfigured to embody broader perspectives on the urban poor. Insights shall be drawn from significant Geographers including Doreen Massey and David Harvey. Michael Foucault’s notions on power and space shall inform the discussion. The discussion shall be rooted in the belief that literature beholds the power of depicting personal geographies in suggestive ways and foregrounds the intricacies of social relations at the grass root level. The study shall be carried out with the intention of adding a new dimension to the application of solidarity approach with the amalgamation of literature and geography.
