The main objective of this study is to understand the degree of knowledge of the heritage resources existing in museums located in the city of Tomar, in a territory in Central Portugal, on the part of students taking a higher professional technical course in tourism. The study was based on collecting information about museum visiting habits among course students, through the application of a questionnaire (n = 206), following the quantitative analysis methodology. The main conclusions indicate that a significant number of students have never visited any of the museums in the city (Tomar), despite it being their city of academic residence. Also, another conclusion is that when students visit a museum in the city, they find out about its existence because they passed “by the museum’s door” or because friends recommended visiting, and another conclusion indicates that visiting museums is the main motivation. Museums as being the desire to get to know these museums, specifically, to walk around and study. The conclusions of the study record lines of future research regarding the need to implement active strategic actions that link the dynamics of tourism and visits to museums in the variables profile, motivation, and attractiveness. Understanding these variables in a dimension of student behavior, who visits museums, interprets heritage resources, and how they enjoy the visiting experience, will be another step toward deepening and contributing to the study. The study highlights the importance of combining tourism and museums in a context that aims to raise awareness and learning, but also to enhance the heritage resources existing in the territory.
