Over the last five years, the tourism economy in Poland and around the world has changed dramatically. The Covid-19 pandemic has hit all economic sectors hard, but the tourism industry has lost out the most. One of the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic was lockdown, i.e. a ban on the free movement of citizens. The effect of state action has been to stagnate the economy and increase the spectre of an economic crisis. Air traffic was halted, hotels were closed and only a few could be used for professional purposes, restaurants could only accept and supply takeaway food. Each of the sectors related to tourism lost a large number of clients and employees, some of whom, due to the bans, were unable to use anything. This study seeks to understand the impacts suffered by Poland. In Poland, the 2018–2019 period was one of great development: people began to earn more and inflation was not high, there was greater freedom to manage money and spend it on entertainment and travelling. We try to characterise the Polish economy, focusing on tourism, namely the economic benefits of tourism development, as well as its negative effects. Comparisons of the economic situation between 2018 and 2022 are presented.
