Strategic planning for tourism destinations, guided by the principles of sustainable development, is imperative. Its aim is to harness the positive impacts of tourism on both the country and local communities while mitigating its negative consequences. An effective instrument for such planning is degrowth, which embodies principles that foster urban preservation, development, and sustainability in the face of tourism-related challenges. This article aims to evaluate the current state of knowledge and implementation of degrowth principles at local, regional, and national levels within tourism destinations in Slovakia. The methodology involves identifying relevant tourism organizations in Slovakia and conducting a questionnaire survey using both the CAPI and CAWI methods to evaluate the integration of degrowth principles in strategic tourism development planning. Open-ended questions are included in interviews, to ensure an unbiased exploration of diverse viewpoints. The gathered data will then be used for quantitative and content analysis. This paper explores the theoretical aspects of implementing degrowth principles in strategic tourism development planning. Furthermore, it provides insights into the present application of degrowth principles at the national, regional, and local levels and offers recommendations for enhancing the positive impact of degrowth in strategic tourism planning.
