Following the onset of COVID-19 in Portugal on March 2, 2020, and the declaration of a national state of emergency on March 18, 2020, the armed forces were tasked with an expansive range of domestic support roles, exceeding their typical crisis response. This chapter analyzes the scope and nature of these interventions, contextualizing them within Portugal’s civil-military history. It argues that the successful execution of these duties, influenced by specific historical, social, and organizational conditions, strengthened civil-military relations and enhanced public trust in the military.
