Application of Photogrammetry and 3D Reconstruction for Heritage Arch Bridges

This paper explores the application of photogrammetry and 3D reconstruction technologies for the preservation and documentation of heritage arch bridges. For this purpose, a 200-year-old heritage masonry bridge was selected as the case study, and a small commercial drone was used for the photogrammetry. Then, the drone-based photogrammetry was used for 3D reconstruction of the bridge. Consequently, the photogrammetry-based 3D model was highly accurate and detailed and mitigated several undesirable factors associated with traditional visual inspection such as risk and cost. The 3D models enable researchers and engineers to better understand the bridges' current condition, identify deterioration areas, and plan for necessary maintenance and repairs. The photogrammetry-based 3D models show great promise to become an ideal candidate for documentation and investigating the change/evolution of structural deterioration over time.
