Challenges and Prospects for Real-Time Glucose Monitoring: Moving Towards Non-invasive Solutions

Diabetes mellitus is a global health challenge. Effective glycemic control is needed to prevent serious complications and improve patient outcomes. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices have transformed the management of diabetes by providing continuous, real-time blood glucose measurements that enable dynamic and accurate control of blood glucose levels. Unlike traditional glucometers, CGM systems provide insight into glucose trends and patterns, significantly improving patient management. However, despite these advances, CGM systems have certain limitations, including the need for invasive calibration, discomfort associated with sensor insertion, and skin irritation caused by adhesive patches. In this article, we review the functionalities, key examples, and limitations of CGM technology and its essential role in diabetes management. Based on this, we discuss the limitations of current CGM systems and propose non-invasive approaches, in particular near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), as a promising alternative. This approach has the potential to revolutionize diabetes management by providing a more user-friendly and accessible solution for continuous, real-time glucose monitoring through the integration of non-invasive monitoring with telemedicine.
