Various Composting Techniques for Food Waste Management

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)-Food Wastage Index report suggests that any common Indian household generates around 68.7 million tonnes of food waste annually. It contributes to an overall 17% of global food wastage, combining homes, food service, and retail sectors. Converting food waste to compost can give a nutrient-rich soil additive, which is technically the decomposition of waste by microbes, thus managing waste effectively. Composting enhances soil fertility, improves plant growth, and mitigates environmental landfill waste problems. From 2022 to 2023, the compost market size grew from $6.82 to $7.4 billion with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.4%, which shows a predicted growth of $9.51 billion by 2027 at a CAGR of 6.5%. This chapter focuses on and promotes sustainable and eco-friendly practices like composting by discussing the various composting techniques available for food waste valorization, simultaneously addressing environmental pollution and reducing carbon footprints throughout the food system.
