Green Cybersecurity: An Evaluation of Antivirus Energy Consumption and Implications for Sustainable Software Engineering

Can a simple consumer choice like which antivirus software to use have a measurable impact on power consumption? In this study, controlled experimentation was designed and conducted to evaluate antivirus power consumption to answer that question, with additional goals of exploring the ramifications for the buyers of software and cybersecurity technologies as well as software and cybersecurity vendors. Empirical testing demonstrated up to an order of magnitude (10X) difference in power consumption for accomplishing the same logical task of a full system scan. A hypothetical thought experiment further extrapolated the results to a global scale, suggesting potential annual energy differences equating to power consumption of small countries and resulting in as much as billions of dollars (USD) in extra energy costs. Potential directions for fostering informed product selection for buyers including practical examples as well as mechanisms to facilitate green cybersecurity and energy-efficient software engineering for vendor success were also investigated.
