This chapter highlights the strengths of neurodivergent individuals. These individuals are different from the norm, but being different is not always a disadvantage. Under the right conditions, the same traits that make them stand out from the crowd can be highly beneficial at an individual and group level. Evolutionarily, this explains why these traits are selected by nature to persist in our existence. However, it is also true that their uniqueness makes daily living more strenuous and challenging for them and their families. They are unable to function in working conditions that suit the majority and/or have difficulty maintaining secure social bonds. Moreover, in stressful situations, they cannot self-regulate, hijacking their ability to use their assets in any meaningful way. Therefore, a strength-based, patient-centered approach is ideal for meeting their needs as it considers their strengths and limitations. The goal is to create social and professional settings conducive to their functioning, teach them to regulate emotions and behavior in adaptive ways and make them feel accepted rather than judged for being different.

摘要
