Neurodiverse Couples
摘要
Chronic neurocognitive deficits and emotional dysregulation experienced by individuals with NDD significantly impair their ability to form and maintain long-term, intimate relationships. Neurodiverse couples, where one or both partners have a neurodevelopmental illness, are known to struggle with communication as well as intimacy at various levels. Studies exploring the subjective experiences of both the affected as well as the neurotypical partner highlight the suffering and frustration felt by both individuals. Hence, it is clear that both partners require patience, understanding, and non-judgmental acceptance of each other’s limitations. Professional help is essential for effectively managing symptoms in the affected partner. Still, in some cases, it may also be beneficial for the neurotypical partner to strengthen their coping ability and build resilience. Interestingly, both partners may have neurodevelopmental issues requiring clinical treatment. In worst-case scenarios, perpetual disappointment and conflicts can turn into abusive behavior from either partner. Notably, these risks are heightened during major life events, such as the postpartum period. Not only is this period fraught with rapid changes and unpredictability, but hormonal changes and sleep deprivation worsen the already-existing neurocognitive symptoms and emotional instability in moms with NDD. During this highly demanding transition, spousal support and help from immediate family are essential for mothers to meet the basic needs of hydration, nutrition, and hygiene. Also, any positive movement in therapy is less likely to last without her spouse’s and immediate family’s cooperation. Lastly, interpersonal problems and mood instability can adversely affect the mother’s ability to bond with the baby and develop a competent maternal identity. For the offspring, maternal distress and relationship conflicts between parents (primary caregivers) can interfere with early developmental processes that are critical for their long-term emotional stability and ability to form secure social attachments.
