Conflicted Courses: A Matrix Game for Course Design
摘要
Course and program design is a complex scenario with multiple stakeholders with different goals for the course or program, including learning outcomes, workload requirements, and space utilisation. Heads of Schools, for instance, must look at a course regarding how its learning outcomes relate to the rest of the program, workload requirements, space utilised, and so on. Meanwhile, the Teaching Assistant focuses on how long it will take to complete the marking. Matrix games simulate complex scenarios, such as designing a robust cybersecurity response policy, identifying possible paths of peace in conflicts, and recreating historical scenarios in education to understand the decision-making at the time better. Conflicted Courses is a matrix game designed around the scenario of course design in higher education. The primary learning objectives are for players to produce a skeleton of a potential course that considers the balance of stakeholder goals. Secondly, to critique stakeholders’ goals in the game in relation to their real-life contexts. This game is intended for educational institution staff engaging in curriculum design. Conflicted Courses contributes to the field by introducing simulation and gaming to the course design domain using games as a design tool.
