Somatosensory System
摘要
Chapter 8 explores the mechanisms involved in a series of sensations grouped under the term “somatosensory sensitivity.” The pathways by which somatosensory information is conveyed from the receptors to the somatosensory cortex are described. After a description of the properties of touch, whether passive or active, the reader is invited to reflect on thermal sensation. The main mechanisms by which pain is experienced are also explained, after which different ways of intervening to reduce this pain are briefly outlined. Part of the chapter is then devoted to describing the mechanisms responsible for proprioception and kinesthesia, that is, the ability to correctly situate one’s body in space. Some disorders related to touch and proprioception are then listed.
