Cultural ideas, values, and norms that reflect taken-for-granted assumptions about how institutions of higher education should operate situate these practices as “normal,” while concurrently situating mental illness in opposition to cultural rules. In this context, mental illness and those who experience it become viewed as threats to the social order defined by local cultural beliefs. Thus, university strategies must address cultures of stigma on individual campuses to reduce mental illness stigma in higher education. In this chapter, we introduce the volume by discussing its contributions related to sources of mental illness stigma on university campuses and working models and/or tests of practical solutions to these stigma sources that may be implemented by campus leaders at their institutions.

摘要
