Mobile strategies for bringing radiology to remote locations and populations have been used for over 100 years. As far back as Marie Curie and mobile X-ray vehicles in World War I, stretching to the present with mobile computed tomography (CT), mammography vans, and ocean-going ship-based hospitals, mobile strategies for health outreach have advanced significantly. In some cases, mobile methods are used to reach isolated populations, such as the one billion people in the world living at great distances from healthcare institutions or lacking sufficient transportation infrastructure. In conflict zones, mobile solutions are implemented to bring life-saving health technologies to injured civilians and military personnel. In infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics, vehicle-based testing and vaccine administration broaden the number of access points for populations to receive preventative care and frontline triage. Automotive vehicle-based mammography, CT, and gynecological suites have enhanced breast, lung, and cervical cancer screening, respectively. Mobile magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) units allow communities access to advanced medical imaging. Ambulances are increasingly equipped with compact head CT units for hemorrhagic stroke detection or tablet-based ultrasound units with tele-ultrasound technology for acute point of care ultrasound while en route to emergency departments. Incorporating radiology departments on ship-based surgical platforms is utilized to address elective life-improving and life-saving surgeries, not easily available, accessible, or affordable within a country. This chapter aims to review the strategies of increasing and improving mobile health outreach. We discuss the benefits and limitations of mobile health, the parameters required for sustainability, and the key differences in models that utilize various modes of transport. This chapter also explores potential strategies to improve patient navigation, community engagement, site selection, route mapping, and sociocultural outreach with mobile health solutions in medically underserved communities.
