Skin is the largest organ in the human body and acts as the first line of defense against various types of biotic and abiotic stresses coming from environmental stresses and internal factors. Thus, permanent efforts have been made to develop topical products known as cosmeceuticals that prevent skin disorders and keep it in good health. In this sense, in the last decade, numerous actions have focused on developing skin care products formulated from bioactive, non-toxic, non-allergenic, and environmentally friendly ingredients obtained from natural sources, replacing the increasingly less accepted synthetic counterparts. A natural source recognized for its richness in bioactive molecules is microalgae since it has been reported that these microorganisms widely accumulate a broad spectrum of substances, preventing adverse effects of stresses and aging. These compounds act on human skin cells in such a way that several cosmetic products such as moisturizers, whitening, skincare, serums, sunscreen, anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, and anti-cellulite agents, among others, are currently being formulated using bioactive compounds or biomass of microalgal origin.
