This chapter contains an analysis of the impact of economic crises on environmental sustainability in the EU27 from 2000 to 2019, focusing on CO2 emissions, the material footprint, and natural resource depletion. The study reveals that economic crises significantly reduce these environmental indicators, highlighting a temporary respite from environmental degradation during downturns. Additionally, research has revealed a negative relationship between GDP and environmental indicators, which aligns with the environmental Kuznets curve theory. The findings underscore the potential for economic downturns to influence more sustainable consumption and production patterns in the short term. However, ethical considerations are essential, as economic crises may exacerbate social inequalities and vulnerabilities. The chapter emphasizes the need for policies prioritizing social equity, justice, and inclusivity in environmental interventions to achieve long-term environmental sustainability.

摘要
