The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has motivated many people to look for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches, in order to prevent the infection or treat the disease. In this chapter, CAM practices during the pandemic are analyzed, with the focus on the categorization of CAM approaches and their ethical consequences. By analyzing the PubMed literature, the following CAM approaches were identified: beneficial substances (tested for their effectiveness), bodily manipulation, mind–body medicine, alternative medical systems, energy therapy, etc. Discussion of the literature identifies relevant ethical issues (differentiating between complementary and alternative uses, establishing evidence for CAM effectiveness, potential biases in CAM research, and conflicts of interest among CAM practitioners). An additional emphasis is placed on understanding the differences between the complementary use of CAM and its integration into health policy.

摘要

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has motivated many people to look for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches, in order to prevent the infection or treat the disease.
