The politics surrounding point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) have evolved over the past 40 years but are still important considerations for advocates from the departmental to national levels. This chapter goes through the history of POCUS including the challenges faced by early pioneers and outlines many of the landmark policies and events that have enabled providers to practice bedside ultrasound (US). A pragmatic approach to crafting a compelling argument in support of POCUS is provided, with a specific emphasis on nonemergency medicine providers. Additionally, the chapter includes tables for quick reference to essential documents, policies, and protocols. Finally, the politics surrounding credentialing and accreditation are explored.
