Advances in computing power, data storage capacity, and user interface design, as well as the widespread adoption of electronic health records, have created unprecedented opportunities for the data-driven transformation of trauma systems. The next generation of trauma systems have the potential to become learning health systems that benefit from the near real-time capture and analysis of high-resolution, point of trauma care data. Such data capture and analysis can inform continuous refinements in the resuscitation and care of individual trauma patients, and the redesign of trauma systems across the spectrum of their activities, including quality improvement, research, and the development of injury prevention and injury control policy. This chapter explores the ways in which advances in health information technology are beginning to shape the evolution of trauma systems.
