Moderate to severe acute pain is almost universally present in the trauma patient. Failure to address this issue can lead to significant morbidity, both in the acute and chronic setting. Long term sequelae, including chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major depression, can develop in critically ill patients with inadequate pain control. Therefore, healthcare providers should be proactive in the management of pain, using multimodal analgesic regimens and interventional techniques aimed to treat both nociceptive and neuropathic pain, both highly prevalent in this patient population. Ultrasound regional analgesia is an ever-growing field that encompasses multiple techniques, both safe and effective, for musculoskeletal trauma and organ injuries leading to severe pain.
