Several accidents that were caused by human error in experienced crews and not due to mechanical failure spurred the development of a new paradigm in aviation safety. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) helped to institute Crew Resource Management (CRM) into the training and operations of NASA spaceflight, the airline industry, and the United States Military. Crew Resource Management is a system of cognitive, interpersonal, and communication skills needed to organize the complex aviation environment and improve overall safety. This philosophy is being adopted in medicine as well.
