This chapter traces the history of the diverse meanings of the word humor from ancient times to its modern association with amusement and funniness. Then it presents the four dominant theories of humor and the problems they face. The most promising of the four is the Incongruity Theory, it argues, though that theory needs a defense against the charge that it makes humor seem irrational. Here the Play Theory comes to the rescue.
