EMI Professional Development at a Korean Science and Engineering University: Practices and Challenges
摘要
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea’s most reputed science and engineering university where the vast majority of its faculty are non-native speakers of English, offers the majority of courses in English. In order to help new professors with lecturing responsibilities, KAIST provides an EMI professional development program (PDP). This chapter describes how the EMI PDP at the university has developed and provides insights on what should be done for its effectiveness. To do so, firstly, the purposes, stages, and contents of the EMI PDP at KAIST are analyzed. Secondly, interviews are conducted among the five EMI PDP instructors and five content professors who have participated in the program. The interviews examine the strengths and weaknesses of the program and draw suggestions for its improvement from the participants’ points of view. The chapter concludes with recommendations for EMI PDPs for science and engineering professors at EMI institutions.
