Poland is counted among the countries with the greatest potential for pilgrimage and religious tourism in the world. This is the result of an ever-expanding network of pilgrimage routes and shrines, as well as centuries-old pilgrimage traditions. Currently (as of December 1, 2023), there are more than 820 shrines and pilgrimage centres in Poland. The subject of the study is the sanctuaries of the Catholic Church in Poland that have been established in the twenty-first century (from January 2001 to August 2024). The aim of the research was to learn about and identify the factors and determinants of new shrines emerging in Poland and the transformation of Poland’s pilgrimage space. The research made it possible to identify more than 300 “new” shrines established between 2001 and 2024 in Poland. The most numerous group among them are shrines of saints and blessed. The main factors influencing the establishment of these new shrines include the development of the cult of Polish women and men elevated to the glory of the altars, the development of the cult of Divine Mercy, the renaissance of the cult of saints and blessed “popular” in the Middle Ages, and the development of medieval pilgrimage routes.
