This chapter provides the last of four methodological lenses through which the book’s themes of experience, evidence and nonverbal and arts-based knowing in music therapy are explored: arts-based research. As an arts-based phenomenon, music therapy is well suited to arts-based research approaches, although it occurs less frequently than might be imagined. In this book, a/r/tography provides a practical and theoretical framework, with its emphasis on knowledge creation, rather than discovery. The rationale for constructing a mobile sculpture is explored: unpredictability is as fundamental both to music therapy relationships and musical improvisation, as it is to the movements of a mobile, and risk, trust and emergence are central to each. The nonverbal knowing that comes from making and deeply observing the mobile is described, together with new insights into music therapy experience and evidence. Parallels and differences are drawn between this approach to arts-based research and others found in music therapy literature. In keeping with the arts-based, experiential purpose of this book, this chapter is told by the four Roles who emerged as different aspects of the author’s voice, earlier in the enquiry.

摘要
