This chapter provides the third of four methodological lenses through which the book’s themes of experience, evidence and nonverbal and arts-based knowing in music therapy are explored: Aesthetic Critical Realism (ACR). Unlike other theories of aesthetics, ACR defines aesthetic experience as an awareness of being-in-relation with the structures and causal powers of the world. Two imagined music therapy stories, introduced as creative writing in Chap. 2 , are re-examined through the lens of ACR. The therapeutic experience that is central to the shared musical encounter in music therapy is understood in terms of aesthetic experience, and it is proposed that they are inseparable and provide experience of personhood. Theories of personhood are discussed and the stories are explored for insights into what counts in current cultures of music therapy, particularly with regard to experience and outsider-measured evidence. In keeping with the arts-based, experiential purpose of this book, this chapter is told by the four Roles who emerged as different aspects of the author’s voice, earlier in the enquiry.

摘要
