This chapter provides the first of four methodological lenses through which the book’s themes of experience, evidence and nonverbal and arts-based knowing in music therapy are explored: autoethnography. Presented as an autoethnographic narrative, the chapter investigates the development of the author’s interests, topic and research activities. In addition, the nature of autoethnography as methodology is explored—its characteristics, ethics and affordances, as well as issues of research reliability and validity in both the evocative and analytic traditions. In relation to the themes of the book, ‘generations’ of experience are identified through this lens and this finding is considered in relation to other autoethnographic music therapy literature. In keeping with the arts-based, experiential purpose of this book, this chapter is told by the four Roles who emerged as different aspects of the author’s voice, earlier in the enquiry.
