Empathy encompasses a wide range of human emotions, as it involves attempting to understand another person’s point of view. Yet, no matter how closely we approach comprehension of what someone else is going through, we never fully arrive. In response to prevalent accounts of empathy that portray it as a characteristic—or even a commodity—possessed by individuals, we propose a relational model of empathy, whereby empathy is exercised intentionally and transmitted through discourse. Analogous to Michel Foucault’s conception of power, we posit empathy as a dynamic force that travels between nodes in a social network. Together, these nodes can be visualized as comprising a mesh through which empathy flows. When exercised simultaneously by multiple members of a community, empathy has the capacity to be mutually transformative. Our model can be applied to create classroom ecologies of empathy: sustainable microsystems embedded as nested structures within larger university ecosystems. This chapter offers recommendations for infusing empathy throughout course design, foundational documents, activities, and workshops, all while centralizing the humanity of everyone in the learning environment.
