This paper considers the field of ambient assisted living with a focus on elderly care. We develop a proof of concept for a system meant to improve the quality of life for senior citizens. The system consists of both hardware components, a microcontroller with accompanying sensors, in addition to a blood pressure monitoring device and a bluetooth module and software components, an Android application. The hardware collects data, while the software processes it and displays relevant information to the user. The instances of daily life we are focused on are: thermoregulation and temperature anomaly detection, pill differentiation and medication adherence, visible light detection and blood pressure categorization. The goal of the system is to prompt the user to pay attention to their health via easily understandable messages. To test the feasibility and usefulness of the data gathered several experiments have been preformed. The results collected from these experiments help us better understand both the capabilities and limitations of the sensors, as well as the app we have developed. This system can improve the well-being of elderly citizens. However, more research is required before it can be seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of the elderly.
