Cultural Aspects, History of Kusatsu Onsen

In Japan, hot springs are a blessing of volcanoes which could sometimes cause colossal natural calamities. Notwithstanding probably from time immemorial, people in this land enjoyed and loved this beneficial aspect of a heated earth with wonderful curative mineral water. Kusatsu is one such place and its highly acidic water with healing effect made it one of the most famous spas in Japan. A narrative of its history and culture offers nothing less than a long story of Japan seen from the perspective of hot springs. Time scale of hot springs is short compared with that of volcanoes. Still the fields related to them are of great variety where all social strata are revealed.
