Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted disease seen worldwide that is spread by direct contact. Although there is no definitive treatment for the infection, there is a highly effective vaccine that can prevent many common types of HPV. HPV infects the cutaneous and mucosal epithelial tissues of the extremities and genital region. Many pregnant women may be carriers of the disease but asymptomatic. There is growing research regarding the possibility of perinatal HPV infection via vertical transmission. Although infants may be infected from the mother, they will most likely be asymptomatic with spontaneous clearance. However, there are some risks from vertical transmission, such as laryngeal papillomata, that need to be considered.
