Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be a disabling and debilitating condition that affects all segments of the population. It is a significant public health concern. Individuals who are incarcerated are documented to suffer from PTSD at an increased rate compared to the general population. However, despite this, PTSD is still underdiagnosed in the prison population. Potentially traumatic events (PTEs) are factors that may place incarcerated individuals at an increased risk of developing PTSD. Some types of PTEs include victimization and abuse, solitary confinement, and coercion. These PTEs can occur both before and during incarceration. Treatment for PTSD includes both non-pharmacological methods and pharmacological methods. Unfortunately, no means have been developed at this time that can prevent PTSD from occurring.
