With evidence showing the sea level will rise 3 m by 2100 and the most recent IPCC predictions of global warming issues that the temperature will increase at least 2.5 °C rather than 1.5 °C (as predicted decades ago), there is an urgent need to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions to help with the severe climate change issues. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), it has set up goals to achieve net zero in the maritime industry by 2050 (I.M.O., Resolution MEPC.377(80): The 2023 IMO Strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, 2023). Therefore, the development of new technologies using sustainable and clean fuels for ships is essential while ensuring that the production of these fuels will not shift the emissions of pollutants to other sectors. Hydrogen has been considered the “golden grail” for power generation for engineers for many years. In this chapter, the hydrogen storage and handling safety on-board will be reviewed and discussed. Different types of hydrogen fuel containment and the related regulatory framework, the design considerations for safer handling, and the current status of research projects in the maritime sector are discussed, outlining the challenges and showcasing that hydrogen uptake in the maritime industry is not straightforward, always compared against conventional hydrocarbon fuels. Nevertheless, it is a promising solution to the climate crisis.
