The idea of beauty and beauty care products is essentially as old as humankind and civilization, with individuals, especially women, striving for a youthful and attractive appearance. This quest has led it to herbal cosmetics that use components of plants, such as leaves, bark, roots, seeds, and flowers known for their healing, nourishing, and protective properties. Herbal cosmetics are widely favored for their minimal side effects, and these underscore various skin issues such as aging, acne, and dryness. Commonly used herbal products are facewash, shampoo, conditioners, and soaps that offer effective solutions for skin care. A hybrid of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals is termed “cosmeceuticals.” Many medicinal benefits are achieved from cosmeceuticals, and depending upon their functional components, cosmeceuticals affect the structure and biological functioning of skin, overall promoting skin health to enhance both the appearance and feel of the skin. The use of green chemistry concepts in herbal cosmetics promotes sustainability, lessens the impact on the environment by using renewable resources, reduces waste, and protects from harmful chemicals. This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. In addition to satisfying customer needs for safer, more environmentally friendly beauty products, the sector supports worldwide efforts in sustainable development by emphasizing eco-friendly formulas and ethical component sourcing. This chapter explores the development of herbal cosmetics, as well as their advantages, functional ingredients, potential for various treatments, and alignment with SDG and sustainability concepts.
