Downstream Consequences
摘要
The machine penalty operates specifically in social situations, but, through its application across a range of situations, it can impact society. In this chapter, I chart downstream consequences for people, business, truth, human uniqueness, and relationships. First, the penalty can lead to us judging people who use AI differently than those who don’t, leading to differentiating them based on social status. And it can lead to harm and suffering in situations where we reject safer AI options. Second, a penalty in businesses can undermine the acceptance of AI solutions or lead a business reputation to sour from within. Third, the general diminishing of AI may also appropriately include AI manipulations and deepfakes but, overall, can contribute to undermining truth and eroding our cohesion as a culture. Fourth, AI challenges human uniqueness, and penalizing AI can either be an attempt to protect that uniqueness or to reflect on and redefine humankind. Fifth, if not penalized, AI relationships will alter expectations for human relationships, but they may also be used as training for them.
