Meet the Avatar, the Centrist, and the Community-Seeker
摘要
In this chapter, we introduce the three personas that emerge in remote-first workplaces: the Avatar, the Centrist, and the Community-Seeker. We describe three psychological factors that push employees into one of these personas: office design (personal workstations versus hoteling), preferences for in-person versus technology-mediated interactions, and varying assessments of costs and benefits of remote work. We discuss, for example, how employees who have come to prefer Zooming over interacting with colleagues in-person have adopted the Avatar persona; how employees who have come to be concerned about the long-term effects of remote-first on work relationships, networking opportunities, and job security for “the little guy in the mailroom” have developed into Centrists; how employees who’ve realized that their needs for friendship and belongingness are not being met in the remote-first environment have come to fall into the Community-seeker persona.
