Pampean Coastal Lagoons

The Pampa region coasts display diverse geological and geomorphological settings, being the most significant two extensive coastal plains affected by the Late Pleistocene-Holocene sea level fluctuations and particularly by the post-glacial transgression and the Late Holocene regressive/prograding processes. Different types of coastal water bodies (coastal lagoons, lakes, tidal flats, among others) formed there. Their evolution was subject to the interplay of key factors such as the geological and morphological conditions previous to their development, sea level variations, coastal and shoreface dynamics, fluvial and aeolian activity, tidal range, hydrological balance and sediment availability. Some of them acted in different ways along the region and consequently conditioned the distinct evolution of diverse pieces of coast and their water bodies, what allowed to subdivide the Pampa region coasts into five sectors: Río de la Plata, Punta Rasa-Pinamar, Mar Chiquita, Miramar-Pehuén-Có and Bahía Blanca-Río Colorado. In relation to coastal lagoons, many formed during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene. However, except the still existing coastal lagoon, Laguna Mar Chiquita, as well as other minor water bodies of this type, most of them ceased to be active and disappeared in the Late Holocene, although some of their evidences are preserved and recognized in geomorphological features or stratigraphic records.
