This was a talk given by Professor Patrick C. Walsh online at The Doctor as a Humanist “Humanism in Surgery” Symposium held at i3S Biomedical Research Institute in Porto, Portugal, from May 19 to 21, 2022. Professor Walsh’s talk centered on the importance of his Christian faith to his career as a groundbreaking and world-renowned Urologist, who is best known for his pioneering work in the development of “the anatomic approach to radical prostatectomy,” which involves nerve-sparing techniques that have reduced the probability of impotence and incontinence, and for his 30 years as director of the Brady Urological Institute. Throughout his distinguished career, his faith in God was fundamental to his work in caring for men with prostate cancer.
