Fresh vegetables including carrots and cabbages are grown for consumption globally and used in various industrial processes. However, they can also be sources of foodborne illnesses due to their susceptibility to pathogenic bacteria, particularly those resistant to antibiotics. This study assessed the susceptibility of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from carrots and cabbages (total = 36) from three markets in Ota for their susceptibility to antibiotics. The samples were surface-sterilized, serially diluted and aseptically cultured using the pour plate technique on MacConkey agar. Following a 24 h incubation phase at 37 °C, the bacteria isolates were enumerated and identified using their cultural features, Gram staining and biochemical assays. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion technique was used to assay the antibiotic susceptibility of the identified Gram-negative bacteria on Mueller-Hinton agar. Escherichia coli had the highest prevalence (34%), followed by Pseudomonas spp. (22%), while Shigella spp., Proteus spp., Salmonella spp. and Klebsiella spp. were the least prevalent (11%). All isolates were sensitive to the antibiotics ofloxacin and levofloxacin but resistant to augmentin, cefotaxime and imipenem. This study showed that the deteriorated carrots and cabbages were contaminated with bacteria strains that serve as microbial food poisoning and potential means of transmission of multidrug-resistant bacteria strains to consumers. This study has shown the need to adhere to good conveyance and handling processes to prevent microbial contamination.
