This chapter investigates contemporary cremation methods, comparing traditional dry cremation with environmentally sustainable wet cremation (alkaline hydrolysis). Modern cremation reflects modern values surrounding death, remembrance, and environmental concerns. Finally, the use of cremated remains (cremains) in contemporary society, through practices such as using custom urns, memorial reefs, and even space burials. It highlights the growing trend of transforming cremains into personal, portable memorial objects, including glass sculptures and tattoos, illustrating the continued evolution of cremation rituals as a form of individual and collective identity. Through these diverse case studies, the chapter underscores cremation’s role in shaping social memory, cultural continuity, and personal expression in both historical and modern contexts.
