In the Sahel, violent conflict and climate change intersect, forcing displacement. Field research in Burkina Faso shows that even before the escalation of conflict, livelihoods were already threatened by unpredictable weather patterns. Tensions between farmers and nomadic herders are amplified by crop yield losses. In a region where advanced irrigation systems are largely absent, changes in the distribution of precipitation can have severe consequences for agricultural output. The dearth of weather stations makes seasonal and weather forecasting difficult. In some drylands, people have used reforestation methods, like Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration to increase harvests. International efforts such as the decade-long MINUSMA peacekeeping mission in Mali were unsuccessful in securing lasting peace in the region. 摘要

This chapter also takes a look at the role of external factors, such as the European Union in the Sahel at the crossroads of climate change, displacement, and conflict.
