Pathologists are asked to deal with a variety of different types of lung biopsy, but all have restrictions in terms of what forms of interstitial lung disease can be reliably diagnosed with each type of biopsy. This chapter reviews the utility and limitations of video-assisted thoracoscopic and open lung biopsies, core needle biopsies, transbronchial forceps biopsies, and transbronchial cryobiopsies. Recommendations for handling biopsy and resection specimens are also covered.

摘要

Pathologists are asked to deal with a variety of different types of lung biopsy, but all have restrictions in terms of what forms of interstitial lung disease can be reliably diagnosed with each type of biopsy. This chapter reviews the utility and limitations of video-assisted thoracoscopic and open lung biopsies, core needle biopsies, transbronchial forceps biopsies, and transbronchial cryobiopsies. Recommendations for handling biopsy and resection specimens are also covered.
