American Indians refused to relinquish the land, so Europeans “disappeared” them through genocide. To disguise this still little-acknowledged fact, Euro-scholars devised a set of stories to explain away the Indians’ dramatic population drop: invisible microbial culprits; harmlessly low-casualty altercations; and originally tiny Indian populations. Collectively, these congealed as “science” and “history,” but research explodes each of the contentions about the vanishing act, as either willful blindness as to the why (intentionally spread disease) and how (altercations as “fractal massacres”), or as a deliberate lie (tiny original populations). Euro-Americans continue monkeying with the diction of disappearance.
