This chapter explores the rise of George Simion, the co-founder of Romania’s radical right-wing party AUR (Alliance for the Union of Romanians), and his role as a central figure in the country’s contemporary national-populist landscape. Simion’s trajectory from civic activism to political leadership is examined through a biographical lens, revealing how his involvement in unionist campaigns, anti-establishment protests, and football ultras movements shaped his populist discourse. The chapter highlights how AUR successfully federated diverse constituencies—religious conservatives, anti-system voters, and diaspora communities—during a period marked by political distrust and social polarization. It also analyzes Simion’s media-savvy strategies, including symbolic events and emotional messaging, which enhanced its visibility and appeal. Although he failed to reach the final round in the 2024 presidential election, Simion remains the most prominent figure of Romania’s far-right, balancing radical authenticity with the need for broader legitimacy in a shifting political environment.
