Globalization is here to stay; nations around the world are becoming intricately dependent on each other. Exchanging goods and services is a prerequisite for fulfilling human needs around the world. International business triggers economic growth for local communities; it allows local companies to achieve a competitive advantage through the capitalization of international resources and opportunities. However, the international market is characterized by fierce competition, turbulence, and a rapidly changing environment. Therefore, companies need to establish relevant international business strategies to survive the status quo. In recent years, companies have been capitalizing on digital technology to advance their international business endeavors. Yet, international business literature has a rather shallow understanding of this phenomenon and its respective implications that is at the strategic, tactical, and operational levels. Therefore, this project aims to first identify what advanced digital technologies could be beneficial for creating innovative business models. Second, the project aims to describe how these digitally enabled business models initiate the creation of a competitive international business strategy. Following the resource-based view (RBV), international business literature in combination with the available knowledge on advanced digital technology will be utilized to build a theoretical base for this study. Thereafter, the constructed conceptual framework will be employed as a theoretical lens for collecting and analyzing data. The project will consolidate around the energy sector in Norway. Implementing a multiple case study design, qualitative approach, and semi-structured interviews as a method for collecting the required empirical data. The new economy, driven by digital technologies could help developing countries diversify output and foster economic growth. Building capacity for digital development enhances the country capabilities to promote innovation, create knowledge and disseminate information. Digital networks increase communication as well as allow people, regions and nations to collaborate and share information aiming at fostering growth and sustaining development. For developing countries, external knowledge enhances the economy readiness to diversify output, create employment opportunities and improve global competitiveness.
