This chapter provides an overview of the book and introduces the reader to the phenomenon of ableist intrusions and how disabled women experience unwanted touching. Highlighting the research gap within both criminology and disability studies, this chapter points to the importance of adopting an intersectional approach to research. In providing the context of the way that disabled women experience abuse, violence and hostility, the chapter also emphasises the importance of incorporating their voices which are often dismissed in policy and practice. This chapter therefore explores the inspiration for the research on which this book is based and the need to understand how disabled women experience intrusive behaviours in public contexts. This book is the first piece of research to have this as a central focus and to offer new insights into this empirically underexplored issue.
